Located 9 meters underground within the territory of the “Līgatne” Rehabilitation Center, lies a 2,000 m² well-equipped civil defense bunker. Built in the 1980s for the political elite, its purpose was to ensure state leadership in the event of nuclear warfare. To this day, the bunker has preserved all of its original equipment, and the exhibits on display offer a glimpse into Soviet-era life through authentic artifacts.

The Gulbene-Alūksne narrow-gauge (750mm) railway is a cultural and historical landmark that operates regular (daily) passenger services. Locally known as the “Bānītis,” it is the only narrow-gauge train in the Baltic States still providing regular daily transportation. The Bānītis ensures local passenger transit between the centers of two neighboring municipalities.

It is a popular tourist attraction and a charming way to journey through the Vidzeme region, as well as a unique venue for events—the most significant being the annual Bānītis Festival. At the home of “Gulbenes-Alūksnes bānītis” Ltd.—the Gulbene Depot—visitors can also find the guest house “Depo” and a public sauna.
