On February 15th at 1:00 PM, the Turaida Museum Reserve invites visitors to Meteņi celebrations to experience ancient Latvian seasonal traditions, songs, and folk games firsthand.
During the event, visitors will be able to enjoy the traditional festivities characteristic of Meteņi – meeting the characters Metenis and Pelnāzis (the Ashman), participating in games, competitions, and the ritual of boasting, as well as enjoying the Meteņi feast: porridge and pancakes. Activities are designed for the whole family, creating a joyful and lively holiday atmosphere.
Special attention will be given to Meteņi masks – visitors are encouraged to prepare theirs in advance; however, for those who don’t have one, there will be an opportunity to craft a mask on-site.
The rituals and games will be led by the Sigulda folklore group “Senleja” and the Lēdurga folklore group “Putni”, who will share their knowledge and experience regarding ancient traditions.
The event will run from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Participation is included with the Turaida Museum Reserve entrance tickets. We invite you to take this opportunity to visit the museum’s exhibitions in the castle and the Gardener’s House, as well as climb the Main Tower of the castle for a bird’s-eye view of the majestic Gauja River valley. The Turaida Museum Reserve is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Enter Meteņi with joy, laughter, and wishes of prosperity for the coming year!
